Electra House is a historic shopping complex located in the city centre of Kuching. The building holds a special place in the city’s urban development as it is widely recognised as Kuching’s first shopping mall. It was constructed on the site of the city’s first main electrical power station, which played an important role in the early modernization of Kuching.

The building was completed in 1965 by the Singapore-based architectural firm Swan and Maclaren, with a construction cost of RM2.8 million. Its completion marked an important milestone in Sarawak’s commercial development, as it became the first modern shopping mall in both Kuching and Sarawak following Sarawak’s entry into the Formation of Malaysia.
Electra House was designed as a mixed-use development, integrating commercial, parking, and office spaces within a single structure. The layout includes:
- Three spacious lower floors dedicated to commercial retail outlets
- A mid-level parking facility designed to accommodate visitors and tenants
- Five upper floors used primarily as office spaces and an open-air platform
This functional design reflected the modern architectural planning of the 1960s, combining retail, business, and accessibility within one urban complex.
