Fairy Cave is a remarkable limestone cave located in Bau, about 30 kilometres from Kuching in Sarawak, Malaysia. The cave has been officially gazetted as a nature reserve and is managed by Sarawak Forestry Corporation to protect its geological and ecological significance.

Fairy Cave forms part of the Bau limestone formation, which dates back to the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous period, approximately 163 to 100 million years ago. This limestone was created in a shallow marine environment with warm ocean currents, far from major sources of land-based sediments. Over time, layers of shells, coral reefs, and other marine organisms accumulated on the seabed. Combined with the precipitation of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) from seawater, these materials gradually solidified to form the limestone structures seen today.

Fairy Cave features the largest cave entrance in the Kuching area and is located just a few minutes’ drive from Wind Cave. Reaching the cave requires a short climb. Visitors must ascend a series of concrete steps rising about 100 feet, followed by additional wooden stairways that lead to the main chamber.

Upon entering through a smaller side passage, visitors are greeted by a vast cavernous chamber with a towering ceiling, creating an impressive natural spectacle. The chamber was carved out over thousands of years by water erosion, while stunning limestone formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, and columns developed gradually afterward.

One of the cave’s most interesting features is a stalagmite formation that resembles a statue of Guan Yin, the Guanyin, located in a shadowy recess of the cave. From an opening high above the cave floor, visitors can also enjoy scenic views of the surrounding countryside, including green fields and forested hills, adding to the cave’s natural charm.
