The Hiroshima–Sarawak Friendship Garden, also known as the Japanese Garden, is located within Sama Jaya Nature Reserve in Kuching. Construction began in May 1996 and was completed in 1997. The garden was officially declared open on 11 July 1999 by the Honorable Chief Minister of Sarawak and the Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture.

The garden was established to symbolise the close friendship and cooperation between the people of Sarawak and Hiroshima Prefecture, particularly in the field of forestry. It also aims to promote the exchange of skills, expertise in landscape gardening, and the sharing of ideas and knowledge in park planning between the two regions.

The garden is based on the traditional Dry Japanese Garden concept, centred on the theme “A Dynamic and Beautiful Sarawak.”
Sarawak’s natural heritage is represented symbolically through the careful arrangement of stones, rocks, plants, and sculpted landforms. Each element is thoughtfully placed to reflect harmony, balance, and the beauty of nature, blending Japanese garden philosophy with Sarawak’s environmental identity.
