In the vibrant city of Kuching, authentic Nyonya cuisine has traditionally been less visible in the local street food scene. Bringing a refreshing cultural and culinary presence to the city is Nyonya Kitchen by Sonia, a dining spot dedicated to celebrating the rich heritage of Peranakan flavours.

Adding artistic charm to the area, the Nyonya Kitchen by Sonia mural features two ladies dressed in elegant traditional Nyonya attire, beautifully capturing the grace and cultural identity of the Peranakan community. The mural has become a small yet meaningful cultural landmark, reflecting the restaurant’s dedication to preserving tradition.

Also known as Peranakan cuisine, Nyonya food is a vibrant fusion of Chinese ingredients and Malay cooking techniques. Its origins trace back to 15th-century Chinese immigrants who settled in the Malay Archipelago and blended their culinary heritage with local flavours and spices.

Renowned for its bold, aromatic, and complex taste profiles, Nyonya cuisine makes generous use of ingredients such as coconut milk, tamarind, lemongrass, galangal, and sambal. The result is a harmonious balance of spicy, sour, sweet, and savoury notes.
