The construction of the new Gothic-inspired church began in 2019 with an estimated project cost of approximately RM38 million. Financial support for the project also included a RM2 million grant from the Sarawak Government through the Unit for Other Religion (UNIFOR), reflecting community and institutional contributions toward the development of the religious site.

The church welcomed its first congregation during the Midnight Mass celebration on Christmas Eve in December 2024. Subsequently, on 28 June 2025, the church was officially opened to the public after the completion of the final phase of financial funding.

The architectural design of the church is further enhanced by an impressive collection of handcrafted stained-glass artworks created by Italian craftsmen. These stained-glass installations incorporate meaningful cultural and historical elements, including the Brooke family crest, the Sarawak state emblem, and traditional Dayak motifs, symbolising the unique multicultural heritage of Sarawak.
Today, St. Peter’s Church stands as both a significant religious landmark and an architectural attraction, reflecting faith, history, and cultural identity in Kuching.
