Situated on the north bank of the Sarawak River, directly across from the Kuching Waterfront, the Astana is an imposing palace steeped in history. Built in 1870 by Charles Brooke, the second “White Rajah” of Sarawak, it was originally constructed as a bridal gift for his wife, Margaret.

Today, the Astana serves as the official residence of the Governor of Sarawak and is not open to the public. However, visitors can explore its beautifully landscaped gardens, which are accessible via a short boat ride across the Sarawak River.
The Astana is also a key stop on the Kuching Heritage Trail, highlighting its historical significance and contribution to Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage.
